It’s about time for celebration. “Happy new year!“ People will say to each other. Gift exchange, endless parties, new clothes, crazy shopping, and an atmosphere of “happiness“ created by the media. Every year, the same story.
But why?
“Saying good-bye to the past and good wishes for the future.“ People would say at the Spring Festival. It is worth celebration, at a connection point between the old and the new. But is Spring Festibal really such a point?
In calendar terms, the answer is yes; but the calendar actually means little. Whatever happens, the beginning of a new year will be that day. But it is not necessarily a separator between two states. You may only finish part of your work, or undergo no changes from an old to a new stage at that day. Actually, most people are just having a usual life when that day comes.
So it is natural that more and more people do not feel so excited at the Spring Festival. TV programmes are boring, even if decorated with an artificial sense of happiness. Delicious meals do not seem so appetizing, as people eat them every day. As for other means of entertainment, they are just carried out as usual.
What really has significant meaning to people is an event that suggests the end of an old state of living and the start of a new one. For instance, the end of a marriage, graduation from university, or the findings of some hard facts of life. In other words, the real connector between the past and the future is not a fixed day in calendar, but a special event, or a psychological sense.
I would like to call that special time point “the psychological new year“. That will be the time when people would like to say “goodbye to all that“, not according to the calendar, but according to what they do feel. That may be a sunny day when people around you are all laughing but you are crying, or that may be a hot day when your friends all feel sleepy but you feel excited, or that may be a dark night when all others are quiet in their dreams but only you cannot sleep a bit. The “psychological new year“,unlike the phrase “new year“ in its universally accepted meaning, is a private one.
It is worth celebration at these time points. These special events witness the changing points of one’s life. They will probably lie in the deepest part of one’s mind. The special event, to me, is the real symbol of new year.
